As a society, we are fascinated by fictional psychopaths. Humankind has an ‘ongoing… fascination with tales of gruesome murders and evil villain. Popular culture abounds with depictions of the mad and the bad; and aberrant psychology has proved a fertile source of such material to the novelist and the reader alike. Perhaps no single disorder holds as much morbid cultural appeal as psychopathy.

There is no question…that readers feel empathy with and sympathy for fictional characters and other aspects of fictional worlds’, yet it is difficult to see how one can empathise and identify with a character who is himself incapable of empathy. If empathy and identification are both the goal and the reward of reading literature, then we are left with a striking ambivalence which needs to be explored.

I actually just looked this up and found out some interesting things.

Young MacGuffin speaks in a North East Doric dialect which obviously is hard to understand. Originally he was going to just speak gibberish but his voice actor, Kevin McKidd, suggested he try a few lines in Doric and Pixar loved it and kept it. Found a couple translations too, but only one of them applies to this gif set and that’s the third one after Merida gave her speech about letting them choose who they marry:

“It’s just not fair making us fight for the hand of a girl who doesn’t want anything to do with it. You know?”

Hmmm, I’ve been meaning to give my dreams a thought for a while now. But after a recent afternoon long conversation with my mother, I think it would probably be, to live in at least 3 different cities outside the US, be successful enough in my career to be happy/actually pull it off, and I guess prove myself wrong about my thoughts on love, find a good guy where God is the center of our relationship. I dunno. Just life stuff right now.

I pick reasonably attainable dreams to avoid longing for something that won’t happen. Or because it’s the latest I’ve stayed up in a week and recovery haze makes me boring and oddly sensible.
